USMC places participants in a wide range of specialties at partnering U.S. institutions. All rotations are observational in nature, fully compliant with B1 and B2 visa requirements.
Observe ward rounds, case discussions, and chronic disease management in academic and community settings.
Shadow attending surgeons in the operating room, observe pre-op assessments and post-op recovery.
Witness cardiac catheterization, echocardiography, and inpatient cardiology consultations.
Observe stroke care, neurodegenerative disease clinics, and inpatient neurology rounds.
Spend time in general pediatric clinics, NICU rounds, and family-centered consultations.
Experience high-volume U.S. emergency departments and the triage, workflow, and acute care decision-making within them.

If you have completed your degree: a graduation certificate from your medical school. If you are currently enrolled: a letter from your Dean or Principal stating your expected graduation date, month, and year.
A recent professional photograph taken within the last six months.

If you have taken any USMLE steps, please include your score report. This is optional but recommended.
A valid health insurance policy with U.S. coverage must be in effect for the full duration of your rotation.
A completed HIPAA training certificate is required. You may obtain one at https://www.hipaatraining.com/.

Common questions from prospective applicants and their families.
No. While a USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 score is helpful, it is not required to participate in a USMC observership. We accept applications from both students and graduates regardless of testing status.
Most participants enter on a B1 or B2 visa. J1 visa options may be available depending on the institution. Our team provides guidance on visa categories during the review process.

Yes. You may indicate your specialty preference and preferred location on your application. While we do our best to accommodate requests, final placement depends on availability at partner institutions.
USMC observerships are observational in nature. Participants shadow physicians, attend rounds, and observe procedures, but do not perform hands-on patient care. This is consistent with B1 and B2 visa regulations.
We recommend applying at least 8 to 12 weeks before your preferred start date to allow sufficient time for documentation review, placement matching, and any necessary visa arrangements.
Students who have not yet graduated are welcome to apply. In place of a graduation certificate, you must provide a letter from your Dean or Principal specifying your expected graduation date, month, and year.
